The Day I shared with Old People

I have never experienced such an atmosphere of deep emotions flowing through people. This is the place where people are living life, which they will never wish in their whole life. Our organization decided to visit there and spread some happiness by sharing some good moments and giving some time which should be given by their family members and not us. It was the first time, when our social organization decided to organize a one day trip for celebrating the auspicious day of “Guddi Padwa” with people, who are living in an old age home. This is known as the New Year for Marathi culture and day for spreading happiness all over.

The place was located in Sakvar i.e. Virar.  This home was in the middle of green blanket of trees, open grass lands and express way touching. When we reached, I saw that some people were already ready wearing new sarees and kurta pyjamas. They were so happy that, some people are there in world, which are thinking about us and our happiness. All the people were waiting for our arrival. We reached there within some time .We contributed grains and the daily food and donated them all these things. These people were left alone in this organization by their beloved ones and they never pay again a visit. These people are being provided with basic amenities and there is a special section for women’s in organization. They celebrate all festivals which are mentioned in calendar (of all religion). This was the striking thing which I thought to be mentioned. They do not discriminate by caste, creed and religion.

There were approx 40 people were staying in the organization. We celebrated guddi padwa by inviting each of them in the open area of organization. Later, each of us met people staying in organization. I met some of them. The conversation with grandmother was the most memorable experience. She was Maharashtrian and 75 years old. She talked with me as a family member. We discussed about each of us. Later, she started telling me problems and the pain and grief she was facing by staying in this organization and other variety of things. The concluding lines were the striking one that was “I don’t have any other option, if I am getting these facilities, I thank lord”. Then she told me that I will die in some day, but I said don’t speak negative and I want you to see you again when I will pay again visit next year so she said that your care is the wish of yours, which will give me energy to live life I future and I will wait for you. In the end she hugged me and gave chocolate. I conversed with most of the people, but in every conversation I observed that they were having wish that their family should contact them. They used to ask us that “Do you have phone please call my family, I want to have a word with them”.

This interaction was the most valuable experience which I got in my whole life. The atmosphere was filled with full of emotions and happiness. Some were happy that somebody came here to spend their valuable time with us and some were on the verge to share their emotion thought of their family. I wish that one should never leave their parents in old age home to live such a life. Please think about your parents and grandparents, that they are the most loving and dear person to each of you all in whole life.

  1. Parag,

I like how you write- simply and with a focus on your chosen topic.

Try moving away from the topics you're comfortable with. I love the pieces on the aged and the accident; you write descriptively and with emotion.

Please watch out for your sentence structure- you can improve there and make the flow a lot easier.

    Good work,

    Riya
